Consumer Savvy Shoppers Don’t Buy Plastic Bags

Consumer Savvy Shoppers and Environmental Consciousness Go Hand In Hand

It should be no surprise that what is usually good for the environment is also consumer savvy as well. One way to save money and reduce the burden on our environment and limited resources is to avoid unnecessarily using paper and plastic bags. Being consumer savvy is easy if you do things that are environmentally friendly too.

Plastic Costs Green - In More Ways Than One

Using plastic bags every day can get quite expensive. It might not seem like much when you pay $2 or $3 for a box of plastic sandwich bags, but consider the number of plastic bags you use each day. If you use one plastic bag per sandwich and you pack three sandwiches each weekday morning that adds up to fifteen plastic bags a week. I’m not even counting the number of plastic bags you use to wrap up cookies and chips or pretzels each day.

All Excess Leads To Problems

Plastic certainly was a useful invention, but we as consumers rely on plastic entirely too much. Plastic might be convenient because it reduces cleanup, but it certainly is not consumer savvy. You can invest in a plastic sandwich container that will last for a year or more. It will be much cheaper than buying plastic bags.

As savvy consumers we should look for ways to reduce our burden on the environment while at the same time saving ourselves money. Consider purchasing reusable lunch bags or coolers for every family member rather than using a disposable brown paper bag each day. You can buy an insulated lunch bag for around $12, and it will probably last for several years at least.

Occasionally, you can truly brown bag it by reusing a brown bag that you got while out shoppin. And forget using those plastic shopping bags. You will end up with way more than you could possibly reuse. Invest in canvas grocery bags and take them along with you to the supermarket when you go for groceries. Most supermarkets credit customers with five cents for each shopping bag they bring from home. That is both consumer savvy and environmentally friendly!
