Consumer Savvy Ways to Save Money

Learn the Tricks that Consumer Savvy Individuals Know by Heart

Being consumer savvy in the New Year is easy if you follow the advice below. As the year 2007 progresses, keep in mind the following advice when you are cleaning your house. We live in a society where things are highly disposable. If something doesn’t work, we can just throw it out and buy a new item rather than fix it. This mentality leads many consumers to throw away items that actually can be useful. Just because you don’t need something anymore doesn’t mean someone else can’t use it. Are you throwing away treasure?

A Win-Win Situation

We've previously discussed the benefits of having yard sales. There is, however, another way for you to pass along items you no longer need that are in good condition. If you don’t want to go to the trouble of having a yard sale, consider donating your items for the tax deduction. A consumer savvy individual always remembers to get a receipt any time they make a donation.

Charities Need Donations

As you do your spring cleaning this year, keep in mind that there are some great ways to pass along items that are in good condition that you no longer need rather than throwing them out. Consumer savvy individuals are well aware of this option, and you can learn what they know here. If you have books that you read and no longer want, you can donate them to your local library. If the library can use the book they will put it into circulation, if not they will sell it to raise money for the library’s programs. Make sure you can get a receipt to qualify for the tax deduction. Generally, you can specify how much the items cost and get a receipt for the full value, even if you’ve read the books already.

If you are shopping a store that offers free-after-rebate items, purchase them even if you don’t use that brand. Consumer savvy individuals do this all the time. You can donate your extra supply of toiletries and products you accumulate to a local women’s shelter. Again, as long as you get a receipt you can qualify. Even though you might have gotten the products for free, you can still get a receipt for the full value of the products.

Clothing is another category of items that you can easily donate to numerous causes. As before remember to get a receipt. Your local Goodwill or homeless shelter might be in need of donations. Don’t throw away barely used clothing that you no longer want. Donate it to help a worthy cause and take advantage of the tax deduction as well just like consumer savvy individuals do.
