Discount Cards and the Savvy Consumer

The Savvy Consumer Finds Every Opportunity for Discounts

As a savvy consumer, you might be wondering whether or not you should buy a discount card in order to take advantage of more savings. These options are every where from outlet malls to stores that you might occasionally shop at, and it might be confusing to determine whether or not you would really benefit from purchasing such a discount card. You might also be wondering what the typical savvy consumer does in such situations.

The Savvy Consumer's Secret Weapon of Choice

The savvy consumer loves saving money, and discount cards (even if you have to pay for them) do provide consumers with yet another opportunity to save money. Let me explain a bit more about discount cards so you understand exactly what I am talking about.

Sally Beauty is one retailer who offers a discount card for a one-time annual fee. It is a loyalty program called The Sally Beauty Club, and for $5 consumers can enjoy discounts on any item they purchase that is not already on sale. If you shop at Sally Beauty a lot, you might benefit from their discount card.

Usually the sales clerk can tell you exactly how much you will save if you purchase the card. If you are buying a lot of items that day, it might be worth it. If the amount you will save is equal to the $5, you should buy the card. Then, on future trips your savings will be pure profit as the card already paid for itself.

Sometimes You Have to Weigh the Cost

Not all cards are created equal (nor do they all come free). Barnes and Noble is another example of a retailer who offers a discount card. Their card is $25, however, so as a savvy consumer you really want to make sure whether or not you will purchase enough books for your savings to exceed the cost of the card.

As a savvy consumer, you have to decide whether or not you should purchase a discount card. No one knows your spending habits like you do. There is no clear cut answer on whether or not you would benefit from a discount card. If you shop at a store very frequently, it is possible that the fee for the discount card would be made up with your first purchase assuming you are buying a lot of items at that time. Be a savvy consumer and carefully consider whether a discount card will save you money before purchasing it.
