Drug Store Cosmetics vs. Department Store Cosmetics

Are Expensive Department Store Cosmetics Better Than Cheaper Drug Store Cosmetics?

Many women are surprised to find out that the average female spends about $600 each and every year on cosmetics -- and that’s not including skin care or hair care products, it’s strictly makeup. So with so much money being spent on cosmetics, cost becomes a significant factor when it comes to deciding which cosmetics products to use. And that brings us to a popular debate -- drug store cosmetics versus department store cosmetics. So which one is better?

Higher Price Does Not Always Mean Better Quality

When it comes to cosmetics, many people are surprised to find out that just because a lipstick or lip gloss costs more money, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a better quality product. For example, Lancome’s Juicy Tubes lip gloss costs just under $14 a tube. However, the same exact company makes Loreal’s Colour Juice which costs about half as much and people who have used both products swear that they’re the same. So why the big price difference?

When it comes to buying Loreal’s Colour Juice at the drug store and Lancome’s Juicy Tubes at the cosmetics counter of the local department store, the biggest difference between the two products is the service you’re going to get when you buy them.

When shopping for cosmetics at a department store, you’ll get customized service and can even try different shades and colors of your favorite makeup before buying them. At the drug store, you don’t usually get this luxury.

Sometimes You Do Get What You Pay For

Now while it’s true that you can indeed find products in the drug store that will be just as good as products at your local department store cosmetics counter, that’s not always the case. Keep in mind that sometimes you do get what you pay for. For example, inexpensive powdered cosmetics like facial powder and eye shadow usually contain talk, which can make the face look chalky, whereas an expensive product like Chanel’s powder is a finer blend, making the makeup look more natural.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is this -- even professional makeup artists have a mix of drug store, department store and boutique products in their makeup kits. If you’ve only shopped for cosmetics at your local department store because you thought drug store cosmetics were of lesser quality, you might want to revisit your local drug store and check out what product lines their currently offering. You might be surprised at the quality cosmetics you find and you’ll save yourself a pretty penny in the process.

Hello,

I just came across your site today. I was wondering if you have any good ideas to get a RoundAIR mini trampoline that folds in quarters and comes with a carrying case that has wheels for a better price. I found their website and their price is $299.00. I have also looked on ebay. Someone was selling one on ebay but I was out bid (holiday weekend kept me from going back to make last bid). That one lightly used and sold for $135.00 plus $35.00 shipping.

Any ideas??

Thank you,

Gina
