“Healthy” Sugars are Certainly Not a Sweet Savings

Is Table Sugar Good Enough?

When you go to the supermarket you might be confused about all the choices you have for buying sugar. You head to the baking aisle because you decided to bake a cake, and when you approach the sugar, you are overwhelmed by all the options. If you’re wondering whether or not you need to buy the more expensive “healthy sugar” or if you can just buy the cheapest brand at less than $1.00 for five pounds, read more below.

The Options Are Overwhelming

There are so many sugar choices in supermarkets, and the larger the supermarket, the more options consumers are offered. From Rapadura to Sucanat evaporated cane juice, just baking a cake can get very confusing for most consumers. The least expensive sugar, typically referred to as table sugar, is the most processed sugar on the supermarket shelves. Specialty sugar brands such as Rapadura still contain molasses and don’t undergo much processing, however the cost is prohibitive for many consumers. Rapadura can cost $5 for six to eight ounces.

What Is It Really?

Evaporated cane juice is simply a fancy name for sugar. It is product that undergoes minimal processing as companies just evaporate the juice from sugar cane to create a white crystal granular product that looks very similar to table sugar. It does cost more than table sugar, but is less pricey than other sugar products. For around $2.50 you can get twelve to sixteen ounces, but compared to a five-pound bag of table sugar that is still quite expensive.

Sugar is sugar is sugar. Really, it’s true. Your body doesn’t recognize the difference between different types of sugars. No matter what brand you buy your insulin levels will still be affected in the same way. The only place you will feel it is your pocket book. So if you are interested in a healthier option without breaking the bank, simply cut back your sugar consumption or use maple syrup as a sweetener when baking. Stay away from the “designer” sugar and your pocketbook will thank you.
