How to Save Money at the Grocery Store

Skip the Deli Counter and Save Money

If you are interested in ways to save money on your weekly grocery bill, it’s your lucky day. I can provide you with one of the most common ways people add money to their weekly grocery expense without even realizing it. Think you know what it is? You might be surprised!

The People At The Deli Counter Are NOT Your Friends

Sure they’re helpful and they can be really, really friendly (if they’re doing their job right), but that doesn’t mean they have your budget in mind. If you want to save money at the grocery store checkout, you have to skip your weekly visit to pre-made food section at the deli counter.

The Costs Add Up

Buying foods from the deli counter can get quite costly. Obviously, you would expect to pay a little more for the items because of the convenience they provide, but many consumers don’t realize just how costly these items are. They can increase your weekly grocery budget by as much as 20% each week, and you can often make similar items at home for a fraction of the cost. If your goal is to save money, skip the deli counter.

Skipping the deli counter doesn’t mean you have to stress yourself out making homemade meals from scratch every night. Instead, plan ahead and make a double portion of some of your family’s favorite meals and freeze them for later use. That way, when you have had an especially busy day and get home late, you can pop a frozen meal in the oven and have dinner in under an hour.

You could also use a soup broth and add fresh vegetables to it to create a semi-homemade soup. This is much cheaper and is just as easy as buying expensive soup at the deli counter. It will allow you to save a lot of money, but you still won’t have to sacrifice your sanity.

Sometimes It’s a Necessary Evil

While it’s not a good idea to make the deli counter a regular stop on your weekly list, the grocery store deli counter can be a good option in some instances. For example, if you are planning to buy fast food one night, you are definitely better off stopping by the deli counter at your grocery store. The food is freshly made and more nutritious than fast food.

Consider some of the above ideas if you are worried about how much you spend at the grocery store each week. Limit your purchase of convenience foods to those times when you are absolutely pressed for time. It is a surefire way to save money, and who doesn’t love doing that?
