Online Banking Saves Time and Money

Have You Checked Out Online Banking?

Online banking has been around for a while and it’s really nothing new. That’s why it’s so surprising that more consumers aren’t taking advantage of what online banking has to offer. If your bank offers online banking and you’re not taking advantage of it, you may be throwing time and money right out the window.

Why Online Banking?

There are a number of reasons online banking should appeal to savvy consumers. Online banking takes a lot less time than driving to your local bank branch and online banking can also save you the hassle of having to write checks and use stamps to pay and mail your bills. In fact, online banking can even earn you more money with higher yields on CDs and interest-earning accounts.

What about Security?

In its infancy, there were significant security concerns related to online banking. However, as the years went by institutions that offered online banking continuously improved their systems and the security measures they had in place. In fact, all online banking security has recently been increased in order to meet 2006 federal guidelines.

A Virtual Bank or a Brick-and-Mortar Bank?

When you do decide to jump into online banking, you need to decide whether you want to use a bank that is completely virtual or use a brick-and-mortar bank that offers online banking services. Each choice has its own pros and cons.

With a completely virtual bank, you usually get higher interest yields and other money-saving benefits because the bank has very little overhead. However, banks that are completely virtual offer you no place to go if you feel the need to talk to someone face to face.

Brick-and-mortar banks that offer online banking services have the service and personal interaction you may be looking for, but you may pay for it with lower interest yields and bank-implemented fees.

What to Look For

Whether you decide to go with a completely virtual bank or a brick-and-mortar bank for your online banking needs, there are a few things you should look for in the bank of your choosing.

First and foremost, make sure that free online bill pay is offered with your online banking service. This is one of the most useful and convenient features of online banking and you want to make sure you’re going to have access to it. Also see if you will be able to make money transfers to and from your accounts that are held with other banking institutions.

You should also make sure that your bank allows you to see statements going at least six months back from your online account and they should send you email alerts if your account balance becomes too low. For security purposes, they should also email you if someone tries to log into your account with the wrong password.

By knowing exactly what to look for in an online banking service, you should have no problem finding the online banking service that’s right for you.
