Steering Clear of Scams that Drain Your Pocketbook

Save Money by Avoiding Scams

As a consumer, avoiding scams can be a helpful way to save money. Falling victim to scams costs consumers millions of dollars every year. Avoiding scams not only saves you money, but it saves you time and frustration as well.

There's No Question About It -- They're Out There

There are, unfortunately, many unscrupulous individuals who look for ways to scam others out of their hard-earned money. Being alert and vigilant are critical if you want to make sure you don’t fall victim to scams. The question is, how do you recognize a scam when you see one?

Forget About Getting Rich Quick

Many scams prey upon the desire people have to increase their wallet. Some scams involve work-at-home jobs. I’d like to be clear. There are definitely legitimate work-at-home jobs. However, consumers are generally advised to follow this advice: you shouldn’t have to pay money in order to work for someone. If an offer sounds too good to be true that is a good sign that it probably is.

Your Email Is The Playing Field

Other scams are delivered right to your email inbox. By now you’ve probably gotten at least a few emails from a wealthy individual who lives in another country and needs help transferring a large sum of money. That person requests your bank account information, and he promises you a nice financial reward for your assistance. Many individuals unfortunately fall victim to this scam. If a person needed assistance, how desperate would they have to be to contact a stranger? Would you deposit several million dollars into a stranger’s bank account? By being aware of this type of scam, you will be able to recognize other scams that are modeled after it.

Assembly Lines Are In Factories

Other work-at-home scams include product assembly. The ads promise you can make good money working at your leisure in the convenience of your own home. You have to front money to buy supplies to assemble the products then when you finish your work, you send it in. What the ads don’t tell you is that your work will always be rejected for not meeting impossible specifications. The scam’s originator makes money by selling the kits to unsuspecting individuals. Save your money by not responding to any ads that request you to submit money up front.

Don't Be the Victim

Falling victim to a scam is detrimental above and beyond the money you will lose in the process. It can cause even the most confident consumer to feel ashamed for being “dumb” and falling for such a scam. That is part of the reason scam artists can continue what they are doing. Many individuals are simply too embarrassed to share their negative experiences of falling victim to a scam.
