The Importance of a Children’s Bank Account

How Opening a Children’s Bank Account Can Be Beneficial for Your Child

If you are a parent and you haven’t already opened up a children’s bank account, you should really consider doing so. A children’s bank account can teach your child about saving, responsible spending and the rewards of being frugal and opening a children’s bank account now can ensure a bright future for your child tomorrow.

Easy, Pain-Free Savings

Every child should have a savings account. Even if you only make small deposits in it, over time that money will grow, even if the interest rate is modest. You can simplify the process of putting money into the account by having it automatically deposited. If you just put in five dollars a week, you won’t even miss the money at all but it will grow over time.

Children’s Bank Accounts Have Added Benefits

Banks know that the children of today are the customers of tomorrow. That’s why they’re doing what they can to make banking attractive for kids. Many banks now offer no-fee bank accounts for young children. Some banks even offer the child a prize every time a deposit is made.

Monkey See, Monkey Don’t

You don’t necessarily need to open a children’s bank account at the bank you currently use. Take a look at your options. Shop around. See what several banks are offering as incentives for opening a bank account and always look for a no-fee bank account or one that does not require a minimum balance. If a different bank is going to be better for your child, there’s no reason to use the bank you currently go to.

Practice Saving

In addition to making regular, automatic deposits into your children’s bank account, you can also deposit all the birthday and holiday money your child receives every year, or at least a portion of it. Allow them to keep a small percentage of the gift money they receive, and then tell them you are depositing the remaining money into their savings account for when they are older. Remember to include them when you make a trip to the bank. Allow them to be part of the process so they get familiar with it and can realize just how fun and smart it is to save. Kids tend to enjoy watching their bank accounts grow.
