Getting Over The Sinking of the Sharper Image Ship
Techies nationwide were understandably dismayed when the Sharper Image filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in February 2008. Once a popular icon among gadget-lovers, its demise has left many people looking for different stores that can feed their technological addiction.
Luckily, there are many stores that can claim that technological gadgets are the bread and butter of their inventory. Hammacher Schlemmer promises to offer just about any gadget you can imagine (and has for 160 years!), ranging from the categories of apparel to electronics, home living necessities to toys. They claim to have the longest-running catalog in the United States, but if you prefer to shop in person, you can visit their one and only brick-and-mortar store in New York City.
Brookstone is another option for the gadget-inclined. This online merchant offers technological solutions for daily life, which spans from durable housewares to electronic gizmos fall into the “well, isn’t that nifty!” category. Seasonal sales make many of these items more affordable.
Although not necessarily appealingly named, Think Geek offers and eclectic assortment of both nifty and relatively useless gadgetry that would nonetheless make excellent conversation pieces. If you fall in love with the site, you can even purchase apparel that boasts your approval to the masses, with a “geek” tag prominently displayed.
