Bad things happen to good people and it's not uncommon for the most responsible of us to fall behind on our credit card payments at one time or another. The key to overcoming it in one piece is how you handle the situation. Here are some tips to help you deal with late credit card payments and what to do if you can't pay on time.

Communication is Critical

If there's one thing a creditor hates, it's a person who tries to hide from the fact that they can't make their payments. Do yourself a favor and don't wait for your credit card company to call you asking where your payment is. If you know you can't make the payment on time, call them and let them know. They might even be able to extend your due date if you're up front about it.

Cut Back

If you can't make your credit card payments, something is wrong. If it's a fact that's been slowly creeping up on you, then you need to make lifestyle changes. This might mean foregoing the gourmet latte you have every morning, but it will be worth it when your finances are back under control.

Debt Counseling

If your spending is completely out of control and your in debt way over your head, then debt counseling services may be the only way to properly handle the situation with your credit card payments. Some counseling services will consolidate your credit card debt while others will just teach you how to better manage your money.

The Last Resort

If you have bitten off more than you can chew and you really can't get a handle on your credit card payments, then bankruptcy may be the only answer.
