Winter Clothing Woes

How to Save Big on Winter Clothing

If you have one or more children, you will undoubtedly have to buy a lot of gloves, hats, boots, and other winter clothing for your kids for this upcoming winter. You might be happy to know that purchasing winter clothing does not have to consume a huge portion of your household budget. In fact, if you do it right, your winter clothing shopping shouldn’t squeeze your cash flow at all.

The Early Bird Catches the Worm

One of the easiest ways to save money on winter clothing is to be the early bird. In September, department stores typically offer a discount on their winter merchandise. Sometimes you can get 15% to 40% off a winter coat by buying it before the cold weather really kicks in. It is also very common for department stores to offer newspaper coupons for an additional 15% off sale merchandise. Buy the local newspaper or check with the customer service counter before shopping to see what discounts are available.

If you can’t find any coupons, try shopping at discount stores like Value City or the outlet malls. Stores like this tend to sell coats for less than retail.

Shop This Year for Next Year

Another easy way to save on winter clothing purchases is to buy coats and hats for the following season after the current season is over. You will have to estimate what size your child will be in the following year, but the savings you can get from buying ahead of time can be quite substantial. Oftentimes, you can find winter coats for 75% off the retail price, and if you combine that with a coupon the department stores sometimes offer, you will literally be getting your winter wear for pennies on the dollar.

You can save substantially on coats, hats, gloves, and boots if you plan properly. Try the above tips to save on all your winter clothing purchases, and spend your savings on fun winter activities.
